The name LMFAO is the acronym for "Laughing My Fucking Ass Off" and is pronounced letter by letter.

[edit] Life and Career

[edit] Formation and Career beginnings (2006-07)

Redfoo (Stefan Kendal Gordy) and SkyBlu (Skyler Gordy) both grew up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, where they formed the group LMFAO in 2006.[7] Redfoo is the eighth and youngest son of Berry Gordy, Jr., the founder of Motown, a Detroit-based record label renowned to be what The Jackson 5 were signed to for six years, and being the first record label to be owned by an African American. Redfoo's mother is Nancy Leiviska, a music video director and writer. SkyBlu is Berry Gordy's grandson, and Redfoo and SkyBlu are both uncle and nephew respectively. LMFAO is typically used as an initialism for Laughing My Fucking Ass Off.[8]

[edit] Rise to fame and Party Rock (2008-09)

LMFAO released Party Rock EP on the iTunes music store on July 1, 2008, and released their full album on July 7, 2009. The album charted at number 33 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the U.S Dance Chart. Los Angeles Times described Party Rock as "14 virtually interchangeable odes to night life."[9]

Their first single was "I'm in Miami Bitch", which was released in December 2008, and peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #37 in Canada.

In early 2009 a little known DJ/producer 'DJ Inphinity' created a bootleg using the Silvio Ecomo remix of DJ Chuckie's 2008 hit "Let the Bass Kick" and the acapella of LMFAO, creating "Bass Kick in Miami". The bootleg was spread across the internet and became a massive success at the Miami Winter Music Conference 2009. Weeks later the song was signed to CR2 records, renamed "Let The Bass Kick in Miami Bitch" (or "Girls" for the clean edit) & the song peaked number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and Number one on the UK Dance Chart. The song also managed to peak 27 in Australia and was certified Gold. It also reached top twenty in Belgium and Denmark.

The second single from the album, "La La La", was released in September 2009, It debuted at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later peaked 55. They later released the third single, "Shots", featuring rapper Lil Jon, which peaked number 68 on the Hot 100. The fourth and final single to be taken from the album was "Yes", which didn't chart in the US Hot 100, but did however peak 68 in Canada. "I'm in Miami Bitch" was used for the opening theme to the reality television show Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami and "Get Crazy" was used for Jersey Shore in 2009.

[edit] International breakthrough and Sorry for Party Rocking (2010-Present)

In mid 2010, they were featured in David Guetta's song Gettin' Over You, which was an international hit, peaking Top Ten in eleven countries and three of them at number one, including in the United Kingdom. It also peaked 31 on the U.S. Hot 100 and 12 in Canada. The duo then recorded their second album, Sorry for Party Rocking in for the remainder of 2010 and is set for release on June 14, 2011 in the U.S. The first single taken from the album, "Party Rock Anthem", which features singer Lauren Bennett and producer GoonRock. The song is so far the most successful of their careers, so far peaking Number One in eight countries worldwide and top ten in many others. The song also marked their first top ten hit in Canada and the US peaking at number four and eight. The second single from Sorry For Party Rocking was released on May 27 and is called Champagne Showers. It features British artist Natalia Kills. [10]

In January 2011, LMFAO embarked on their first Asian tour. They performed in Singapore; Manila, Philippines, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, among other cities.[11]

[edit] Influences

LMFAO cites a vast range of different influences, such as rappers like Tupac Shakur, R&B artists like James Brown and Michael Jackson, and rock bands such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.[12] Both are devoted fans of Michael Jackson and they use many of his dance steps in their dance routines. Also, LMFAO cites taking a huge inspiration from Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM, who first got them introduced to electronic music.[13] Notably, Redfoo is a former brother-in-law of Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson's older brother, and is also an uncle of Jermaine Jackson, Jr.[2] In 2007, LMFAO attended the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida, in which the duo says was an experience that inspired their musical and creative style.[14]

[edit] Controversy

In February 2010, SkyBlu was involved in an altercation on an airplane with Mitt Romney, an ex-Massachusetts governor and candidate for the 2012 U.S. presidential election, while the plane was en route to Los Angeles from Vancouver, during the 2010 Olympics. SkyBlu was reported to have attacked Romney and was subsequently removed from the airplane. He claimed that he hit Mitt after he was attacked first, despite earlier press coverage suggesting otherwise,[15] Romney attacked first, performing a "vulcan grip" on him, putting him in serious pain and danger.[16] SkyBlu was repeatedly asked by Romney to put his seat back up because it was reclining while he was sleeping in it. The claims were never mentioned in a TMZ video (which shows SkyBlu being escorted off the aircraft by authorities).[17][18] Mitt Romney later claimed that SkyBlu "gave a good swat — and broke my hair."[19]
